Irrigation contributes to improving agricultural production Update 11-01-2019 10:58
The unusual development of the weather in recent years has greatly affected agricultural production. Therefore, irrigation continues to face the adverse events of the weather, local droughts, and flooding due to storms in some areas; and the new challenges and higher demand for socio-economic development. The introduction of the Irrigation Law with a lot of policies, programs, and comprehensive plans has affected the General Department of Irrigation’s activities. The above disadvantages require the new initiative and management methods in irrigation work to meet practical needs.

In 2018, the General Department of Irrigation was successful in the construction of legal documents and in starting the construction of the database and promoting communications to serve direction and administration, especially the Department’s active participation with the mission of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in inspecting droughts and flooding and the operation of irrigation constructions in localities, thereby giving timely advice to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; issuing directives, official telegrams, and instructive documents; and urging localities to implement the solutions for operating irrigation constructions, preventing droughts, salinity, and flooding to minimize the impacts on agricultural production and people’s livelihoods.

The 2017-2018 winter-spring crop provided irrigation water for 611,800 hectares of rice, shortening the time for discharging water from the hydroelectric reservoirs by 3 days compared as planned with a total volume of 5.74 cubic meters, and so on. So far, 270,000 ha of upland crops have been applied with advanced and water-saving saving exceeding by 38% as planned.
